NextGen Healthcare

Our Story

In high school, Meriem participated in EQT’s ASPIRE program, where she was paired with a mentor and attended various college preparedness sessions. Through her involvement, she earned a scholarship and came to deeply appreciate the impact a supportive mentor can have during high school. At Pitt, she and Malak joined the PEER program, a mentorship initiative that supports undergraduate students from racially underrepresented backgrounds in STEM as they pursue research opportunities. The program helped them secure research positions, grow both professionally and personally, and receive meaningful mentorship. Recognizing how transformative these experiences were to their own academic journeys, they were inspired to create a similar program for high school students in the Pittsburgh area. Together, they assembled a board of like-minded individuals who shared their vision and values.

Who We Are

NextGen Healthcare is a student-led initiative at Pitt, dedicated to empowering first-generation and underserved high school students in Pittsburgh to explore and pursue careers in healthcare. We aim to bridge the gap in educational and academic resources, providing mentorship, guidance, and hands-on opportunities.

Our Impact

During the 2024–2025 program, we hosted 7 events focused on professional development and hands-on learning. Students gained valuable skills in resume writing, interviewing, and crafting compelling personal essays. They also participated in an undergraduate panel and a variety of interactive activities. In addition to these enriching experiences, all participating students became CPR certified through our program. We also awarded $650 in scholarships to 4 students in recognition of their growth and commitment within the NGH program.
